Bird count results released

Tim Ewing, director of the Navarino Nature Center in Shiocton, this week released the results of the annual Shawano Christmas Bird Count.

The 2016 count took place from sunrise to sunset Dec. 17. Ewing said 34 people volunteered to survey areas around Shawano County. Eight of them drove around the county surveying sites, while others counted birds at their feeders.

The volunteers were Art Schoff, Bill Koonz, Sue Malliet, Richard and Julie Radtke, Joe Radtke, Ron and Lynn Ackley, Dean and Mary-Anne Schoenike, Kris Doan, Judy Hansen, June Brockman, Dave and Jean Bartels, Al and Gloria Pyatskowit, Daniel and Shirley Krueger, Greg and Diane Rick, Gary and Barb Behnke, Myrtle Behnke, Mark Peterson, Marty Gerdt, Ruthann Meiers, Tom and Jane Melchior, Gladys Stezenski, Bob Wendt, and Doug and Julie Wilber.

Participants observed 45 different species on the count day, and a total of 7,710 individual birds.

Birds sighted included the following: 721 Canada geese, 33 trumpeter swan, seven American black duck, 846 mallard, two ring-necked pheasants, 396 wild turkeys, one great blue heron, 27 bald eagles, seven red-tailed hawks, two rough-legged hawks, three Cooper’s hawks, two American kestrel, 796 rock doves, 452 mourning doves, one barred owl, three red-headed woodpeckers, 25 red-bellied woodpeckers, 54 downy woodpeckers, 29 hairy woodpeckers, one northern flicker, 12 pileated woodpeckers, 115 blue jays, 364 American crows, 10 common ravens, one red-winged blackbird, 197 black-capped chickadees, seven red-breasted nuthatches, 85 white-breasted nuthatches, five brown creepers, seven American robins, 1,781 European starlings, 29 horned larks, nine cedar waxwings, 234 American tree sparrows, one tufted titmouse, one chipping sparrow, one white-crowned sparrow, 555 dark-eyed juncos, 56 snow buntings, 75 northern cardinals, four purple finches, 48 house finches, nine pine siskins, 484 American goldfinches and 203 house sparrows.

Information was tallied by the Navarino Nature Center and sent to the National Audubon Society, which sponsors the national Christmas Bird Count.
