The Shawano County Sheriff’s Department this week announced the promotion of one of its deputies to the detectives division.

Nick Prey will fill the vacancy left by Keith Sorlie, who recently took a job with the Shawano Police Department.

“I am very pleased to have Nick join our Detective Division,” Sheriff Adam Bieber said. “I believe Nick will bring the energy, dedication and expertise that is required to work on drug related cases and to reduce the availability of illegal narcotics to the citizens of Shawano County and our youth.”

While working as the department’s K-9 officer with K-9 Deano from December 2008 to October 2012, Prey took more than 77 pounds of marijuana off the streets, according to the sheriff’s department.

Prey started with the department in the jail in 2002. He moved to patrol deputy in 2005. He is also team commander for the Special Response Team, and has been part of that team since October 2012.

Prey is a graduate of Shawano High School and received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

His certifications include multiple K-9 certifications, field training officer, interview and interrogations, basic SWAT and National Tactical Officers Association team commander training, less lethal and munitions instructor, commercial motor vehicle enforcement school, and basic drug investigator school.

This is the second detective vacancy filled from within the department since Bieber took over this year.

In June, Jesse Sperberg was promoted to fill the vacancy left by Wade Wudtke, who took a job with the Clintonville Police Department.

“Jesse has been crucial in most of the arrest’s dealing with child predators online and is the lead detective responsible for the arrest in the sexual predator posing as a travelling basketball coach,” Bieber said. “Detective Sperberg is a big reason why our detective division has had such success in detecting and arresting predators regarding crimes against children.”

Sperberg is trained and certified in computer forensics, Internet crimes against children operations and undercover operations, death investigations, evidence technician; and additional evidence training.

“He also took second place in a coloring contest in first grade,” Bieber said.
