Closure expected to last until late October

State Highway 22 between Shawano and Cecil has been closed for replacement of a bridge over the Shawano Tributary in the town of Washington.

The state Department of Transportation said both north and southbound lanes would remain shut down between Hillcrest Road and Cedar Lane until late October.

The tributary bridge is located near the historical marker on Highway 22.

Motorists heading to Cecil from Shawano will be detoured onto Highway 47-55 to Highway 29, then onto northbound Highway 117 and back to Highway 22, with the route reversed for drivers headed toward Shawano.

Shawano County Sheriff Adam Bieber said the closure will cause some problems for deputies, emergency responders and firefighters.

“It would add time to our response to any location east of this work site,” he said. “The most important thing is to remind our first responders of the detour so they can plan their response in advance.”

Crews will replace the single span bridge over the tributary with a box culvert. Concrete Structures Inc. is the prime contractor for the $868,000 project. The project is being paid for by state transportation funds.

Construction is scheduled for completion by late October.
