At least one seat on the Shawano County Board will be open when the spring election rolls around in April.
District 5 Supervisor Sandy Steinke said she is not seeking re-election. Her district includes Wards 9 and 10 in the city of Shawano.
“I have a new job, and with my new employer, my hours don’t coincide with County Board time,” she said. “Unfortunately, I’ll have to give it up.”
The new job won’t interfere with Steinke’s duties as a city alderperson, however.
“The city has night meetings,” she said.
The County Board holds daytime meetings during the fall and winter months. Occasional attempts to have all meetings held in the evenings have been repeatedly voted down on the board floor.
Steinke said she will miss the County Board.
“I enjoy serving the people of Shawano County,” she said. “We were making progress in a few areas and I would have liked to continue.”
Potential candidates for the County Board were able to start circulating nomination papers this week for a place on the April 1 ballot, or the Feb. 18 primary if that becomes necessary.
All 27 board members are up for re-election.
Papers taken out this week show some possible County Board races shaping up, assuming the candidates return 20 signatures to the County Clerk’s office by Jan. 7.
David Korth, of Cecil, has taken out papers to challenge District 10 Supervisor Robert Krause, of Krakow.
Cheryl Klapste has taken out papers for the District 18 seat, comprised of Wards 2 and 3 of Richmond, held by Steven Gueths.
In District 23, which includes Fairbanks and Tigerton, Annette Rockey has taken out papers for the seat held by Ray Faehling.
Krause and Gueths have also taken their papers out for re-election bids. Faehling has already returned his nomination papers.
