Burglary
A homeless man who had been staying at a local shelter has been charged with breaking into the People’s Express South in Shawano last month and stealing numerous packs of cigarettes.
Michael Hatcher, 19, could face a maximum 12 1/2 years in prison and a $25,000 fine if convicted on the felony burglary charge. He is also charged with misdemeanor counts of theft and criminal damage to property.
According to the criminal complaint, an employee at People’s Express told police a homeless man had been in the store just before closing on Nov. 23 and was acting suspicious.
He gave a description that matched a homeless man who had been staying at the Sam’s House homeless shelter.
Hatcher was ordered held on a $5,000 cash bond. He has entered a plea of not guilty and is scheduled for a pre-trial conference on Jan. 12.
OWI/injury, fleeing
A Keshena teen is scheduled for a court appearance next week on felony charges of fleeing and causing an injury while driving under the influence with a child in the vehicle.
Ryan J. Waukau, 18, was arrested after a chase that began in Menominee County and moved into Shawano County on Dec. 6.
He ultimately crashed on Town Hall Road in the town of Red Springs, according to the criminal complaint.
The crash caused head, neck and spine injuries to a 16-year-old passenger, according to the complaint, which also states there were two 14-year-olds and an infant in the vehicle.
Waukau could face a maximum 3 1/2 years in prison and $10,000 fine if convicted of fleeing an officer, and up to two years imprisonment for first offense OWI with a minor in the vehicle-causing injury.
Waukau was ordered held on a $5,000 cash bond and is scheduled for an adjourned initial court appearance Tuesday.
Burglary, domestic abuse
A Cecil man is facing felony charges of domestic abuse-related burglary and suffocation and strangulation in connection with an alleged incident in the city of Shawano last month.
Ryan J. Smith, 27, is accused of breaking into a home and assaulting and choking a woman during a Nov. 18 domestic incident.
He could face a maximum 15 years in prison and a $50,000 fine if found guilty of burglary-battery, and six years and a $10,000 fine if convicted of strangulation and suffocation.
He was ordered held on a $1,500 cash bond is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Feb. 14.
Attempted sexual assault
A Manitowoc man has been charged with felony counts of attempted sexual assault with the use of force, reckless endangerment and strangulation and suffocation for an alleged domestic incident in the town of Navarino.
Daniel N. Ortega, 32, is accused of trying to force sexual intercourse on a woman that he allegedly also choked.
According to the criminal complaint, Ortega also used a stun gun on the woman at one point during the Oct. 28 incident before she was able to escape.
Ortega could face a maximum 20 years in prison and $50,000 fine if convicted of attempted second degree sexual assault; 10 years and a $25,000 fine for reckless endangerment; and six years and a $10,000 fine for strangulation and suffocation.
He is free on a $25,000 cash bond and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Jan. 26.
