A Japanese restaurant and sushi bar appears slated to go into the vacant Yesterday’s Diner on East Green Bay Street, according to building permits and beverage licenses applied for at the city.
However, attempts to reach the prospective restaurant owners for confirmation have not been successful.
Shawano building inspector Brian Bunke said permits have been taken out to re-do carpeting and flooring at the building at 1045 E. Green Bay St.
However, he said, the permits have not included any remodeling or reconstruction.
There have been parties working at the site this week.
Bunke said the information provided in the permit applications was that it would be a Japanese restaurant and sushi bar. He said it was his understanding that the applicants have a restaurant in the Milwaukee area.
The beverage applications were taken out in the “trade name” of Wasabi 168, according to Deputy City Clerk Lesley Nemetz.
Wasabi 168 Inc. was formed in March, according to the Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions, with an office at 1045 E. Green Bay St. in Shawano.
The applications include licenses for the sale of wine and sake.
The former Yesterday’s Diner went into foreclosure in 2012 and failed to get any bids at a sheriff’s sale other than the creditor’s, Anchorbank of Oshkosh, which opened the bidding at $342,818.
The diner was recognizable for the 1957 Chevy on its roof. It opened in September 2006, aimed at evoking 1950s nostalgia, complete with retro furniture and a classic car theme.
