"I want them to know the meaning of the holiday," Nicolaus said. "It's not just a day they don't have to go to school." Nicolaus has purchased 30 flags each year.

Rainy weather could change the location of Monday’s Memorial Day observance in Shawano, but don’t expect it to dampen the spirits of veterans and the crowds of visitors that always turn out for the annual event.

The program is scheduled for 10 a.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery, following the parade to the cemetery from Huckleberry Harbor.

In the event of rain, the program will be held at the Shawano Community Middle School, 1050 S. Union St. Monday’s forecast currently calls for a 50 percent chance of rain.

Dennis Bohm will once again serve as master of ceremonies.

Guests will included Shawano Mayor Jeanne Cronce, County Board Chairman Jerry Erdmann and County Veterans Services Officer Nick Benzinger.

Shawano Community High School Principal Scott Zwirschitz will be the main speaker.

Musical presentations will be provided by Wolf River Harmony and the Shawano middle and high school bands.

The memorial wreath will be placed by Dorothy Gouine, of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, and DAV Member Dan Wilson.

Flags, courtesy of Qualheim’s True Value, were placed on veterans’ graves this year by Boy and Girl Scouts.
