Menominee Indian School District’s recent Scholarship Gala raised more than $21,450 for the district’s scholarship fund.

The total is more than $4,000 more than last year’s inaugural event.

“We are amazed by, and thankful for, the generosity of the people in our community as well as our vendors and partner businesses and organizations,” said Kate Mikle, event chair. “It’s gratifying to see so many people who understand that scholarships are an incredibly important factor in whether or not a student pursues higher education.”

In addition to raising a record amount for scholarships, the gala also set a new attendance standard, with more than 180 people attending.

“The gala exceeded our expectations in so many ways,” MISD Superintendent Wendell Waukau said. “The success of the gala shows that people do care and they want to play a role in helping our students succeed.”

Waukau also praised and thanked the volunteer committee that planned the gala.

“It was a lot of work, but it resulted in a successful event,” he said.

The gala committee included Mikle, Kim Mitchell, Corey Webster, Bob Burr, Terry Brooks, Michael Philips, Michelle Frechette, Paula Fernandez and Waukau.

MISD serves approximately 850 students.

The gala was sponsored by Menominee Tribal Enterprises, with Draeger Propane as the dessert sponsor and M3 Insurance as the entertainment sponsor.
