Authorities responded to a disturbance call Friday that escalated into a chase and a 52-year-old Wittenberg man being shot, according to the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department.

The suspect was receiving treatment for his injuries at a local hospital late Friday.

Authorities responded just before 5 p.m. to a report of a distraught individual in the town of Almon who had allegedly made comments threatening violence. Attempts to speak with him via phone were unsuccessful due to verbal aggression, the sheriff’s department said.

Deputies and the Special Response Team, including members of the Shawano Police Department and the Stockbridge Police Department, were dispatched to the area. An armored vehicle, from the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office, was dispatched to assist.

The initial response involved isolating the individual, the sheriff’s department said in a news release.

At approximately 7:30 p.m., the suspect became involved in vehicular pursuit with authorities and allegedly made threatening actions toward law enforcement personnel.

Sheriff’s officials responded to the threat, resulting in the suspect being hit by gunfire, the department said.

The sheriff’s department was assisted at the scene by Tigerton Ambulance Service and the Wittenberg Fire Department. The criminal investigation is being overseen by the Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigation.

Investigation into the incident continues. No other information was available Friday.
