Two people were killed Wednesday in a head-on crash on state Highway 47 south of Bonduel, according to the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department.
The accident happened near the intersection of state Highway 156 in the town of Lessor just after 1 p.m.
The incident is being investigated by the Wisconsin State Patrol, but the sheriff’s department, which also responded to the crash, said both drivers died at the scene.
The initial investigation showed that a vehicle northbound on Highway 47, driven by an 84-year-old Brookfield man, attempted to pass another vehicle and struck a southbound car driven by a 57-year-old Shawano man, according to the sheriff’s department.
The northbound vehicle ended up back in the northbound lane after the collision and was struck from behind by a northbound semi.
An 81-year-old Brookfield woman, who was a passenger in the northbound vehicle, was flown to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Green Bay. Her condition was unknown.
Bonduel EMS and Tri-County Fire also responded to the crash, which closed down all lanes of Highway 47 for the rest of the afternoon.
The State Patrol is handling crash reconstruction.
Names of the deceased were being withheld until the families are notified.
