Shawano County authorities are warning that ice conditions on the upper Wolf River are treacherous and are concerned that snowmobilers have recently ventured out on it.

“We have had reports of snowmobiles traveling on the Wolf River north of the dam,” Sheriff Adam Bieber said. “The ice is very thin, and we highly recommend nobody travel on the rivers.”

Bieber said the water current is quick and ice conditions change frequently.

Capt. Tom Tuma said there have recently been some patches in the ice that have opened up, and even with the recent drop in temperatures the ice remains treacherous.

People also need to use caution going out onto Shawano Lake, Tuma said.

“A few vehicles have gone through near the shoreline,” he said.

The sheriff’s department advises checking with local bait shops on ice conditions.
