A federal grand jury on Wednesday returned a two-count indictment against a man involved in habitual domestic violence offenses on the Menominee Reservation.

The indictment charged Jeffrey Matchopatow, 22, of Keshena, with one count of domestic assault by a habitual offender and another count of assault resulting in serious bodily injury.

Matchopatow faces a maximum sentence of 10 years imprisonment, $250,000 and three years of supervised release on each count.

According to the indictment, Matchopatow assaulted a person with whom he lived on Sept. 11, resulting in facial lacerations and a fractured jaw.

Matchopatow was previously convicted in Menominee Tribal Court of at least two cases involving domestic violence, which makes him a habitual offender under federal law, according to the indictment.

The case was investigated by the Menominee Tribal Police Department and the FBI. It is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Andrew J. Maier.
