Group needs $200K more to hit goal

With the Smalley Park amphitheater in place, aside from a few finishing touches that will be added in the spring, the Shawano Ski Sharks are looking to continue fundraising efforts for other park improvements.

The Sharks partnered with the city on developing the park at Wolf River Beach, which has been home to the Sharks for about 20 years.

“With the Sharks’ investment into the new ski site and the city’s commitment to the new park, together we will create a true destination for the families in Shawano and the guests that visit us,” Ski Sharks President Dave Passehl said. “Overall, the new park will be inviting and a real statement to the city’s commitment to provide quality parks and resources for our community.”

In addition, he said, “the Sharks hope to bring the community more visitors as we host tournaments and other events at the new site.”

The Sharks have been recognized by the Water Ski Federation for their adaptive water ski training courses, Guinness World Record efforts and other events.

“With having more room before the bridge, we believe our site will be considered for state- and nationwide events,” Passehl said.

“To me, it feels like our community is thriving and growing,” he said. “I really sense a renewed effort to enhance our park system by park and recreation director Matt Hendricks.”

Passehl said the Ski Sharks are still short of fundraising goals to complete other amenities at the park, including a concession stand and toilet and storage facility, and walking trails.

“I have been soliciting grants and private donations to get to where we are already, but I would love to be able to break ground on the new building in spring, optimistically hoping it could be used next June,” Passehl said. “Of the overall costs, we need to raise approximately $200,000 more.”

Passehl said the group is open to hearing from anyone who wants to help out.

“We are a nonprofit water ski team that has an operating budget to meet every year, in addition to working to raise additional money to help fund the Smalley Park project,” he said. “Every bit adds up and we appreciate every donor that has given to this point.”
