Sturgeon restoration among topics

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, in cooperation with the Menominee Tribe, will hold three informational meetings this month to discuss development of a fisheries and water resources management plan for the Wolf River from Shawano to Keshena Falls.

The Wolf River powers the Balsam Row hydroelectric dam, which is regulated by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. The dam, owned by Wolf River Hydro, is also known as the Upper Shawano dam.

The meetings will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday at the Stone Toad, 1109 Oneida St., Menasha; 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday in the theater at Menominee Indian High School, N522 State Highway 47-55, Keshena; and 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Community Room at City Hall, 127 S. Sawyer St., Shawano.

Participants will review progress on various dam license requirements and explain how the current sturgeon capture and transfer system functions.

The meetings will include an overview of sturgeon restoration efforts by DNR and the Menominee Tribe above the dam.

Presenters will include representatives from DNR fisheries, FERC and the tribe.
