Figures are still preliminary

The numbers are subject to change at this early stage of the game, but preliminary figures for the city of Shawano’s 2017 budget call for a tax rate relatively unchanged from this year’s and a tax levy expected to go up less than 1 percent.

A worksheet of the 2017 budget was handed out to city officials Wednesday at their Common Council meeting and was also obtained by the Leader, with the caveat that the document — labeled Version 1.0 — was still a work in progress.

“This is the first kick at the budget,” City Administrator Brian Knapp said. “There’s still a fair number of numbers we don’t know yet.”

Knapp said that figures are still awaited from other taxing entities — including the county and Shawano School District — that will determine the total tax rate that property owners will pay.

As currently envisioned, the city’s share of the tax levy would increase by about $41,000, from $4.73 million to $4.77 million.

The city’s tax rate would increase from $9.26 per $1,000 to $9.27 per $1,000 of equalized value, under current projections.

The city’s equalized value, which will also determine the ultimate tax rate, is anticipated to increase by about 1.5 percent, but that figure won’t be known until the state releases its own figures later this month.

The city expects slight increases this year in the value of commercial, manufacturing and agricultural real estate properties, according to the preliminary budget.

The city’s general operating expenses are also expected to be relatively unchanged from this year, according to the preliminary budget.
