The University of Wisconsin-Extension offices in Marinette, Oconto and Shawano counties will hold a joint Heart of the Farm-Women in Agriculture conference Nov. 3 in the town of Chase.
The conference will run from 9:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. at the Chase Community Hall, 8481 County Road S, Pulaski. The registration deadline is Oct. 21; space is limited.
The program is designed to address the needs of farm women by providing education on pertinent topics, connecting participants with agricultural resources and creating support networks.
The day will begin with Caroline Imig, national award-winning pie maker from Wayne’s Family Restaurant in Oconto. She will discuss the American Pie Council’s National Pie Contest and her secrets to towering meringue. Participants will be able to make pies with her and to discuss the pitfalls of pie making.
Lynn Jones, coordinator of the Barn Quilts of Oconto County, will discuss the project and quilt painting techniques while helping participants create a miniature block of their own. Painting smocks and all supplies will be provided.
After lunch, Scott Reuss, Marinette County agriculture agent, will discuss the legalities of making and selling food items from home.
Jamie Patton, Shawano County agriculture agent, will teach participants about compositions of surface soil microorganisms in northeast Wisconsin and the importance of the critters in gardens and fields.
Registration is $20 per person. For registration or information, call the Oconto County UW-Extension at 920-834-6845. The conference brochure and a mail-in registration form can be found at http://oconto.uwex.edu/files/2010/05/HOFBrochure2016.pdf.
