Shawano police are offering “active threat training” for local businesses interested in taking part.

Police Chief Mark Kohl said local law enforcement agencies and officers are frequently asked to provide guidance to their communities about what civilians should do if faced with an active shooter threat.

The Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events course, designed and built on the “avoid, deny, defend” strategy, provides strategies, guidance and a proven plan for surviving an active shooter event.

“Active shooter events are often thought of as school based, Kohl said. “In fact, schools represent only 25 percent of active shooter events. Just over 50 percent of active shooter events occur in commerce locations – retail, shopping malls, manufacturing facilities, offices or other locations used for business purposes.”

The presentation takes approximately two hours but can be condensed depending on time requirements.

Topics include the history and prevalence of active shooter events, the role of professional guardians, civilian response options and medical issues.

Participants learn about disaster response and how to prepare for and respond to being trapped in a building during an active shooter event. Participants also learn steps to take to assist law enforcement and to limit potential victims.

“We in public safety should educate those we serve to be safe and not become victimized by those that will take advantage of us,” Kohl said. “Don’t become a victim. Let us educate you to be safe in your businesses and homes.”

Lt. Dan Mauel attended a national certification program to present the program to Shawano area businesses upon his return.
