A member of the Stockbridge-Munsee Indian tribe is challenging an incumbent for a seat on the Shawano County Board.
Roger Miller, a former member of the Stockbridge-Munsee Tribal Council, is running against County Board District 21 incumbent Bert Huntington in the April 5 election.
Huntington is seeking his fourth term on the County Board.
District 21 includes the Stockbridge-Munsee reservation along with Ward 1 in the town of Red Springs, and all of the village of Bowler and town of Bartleme.
The Shawano Leader posed three questions to each of the candidates. Here are their responses:
Why are you interested in serving on the Shawano County Board?
Huntington: I’m looking out for the best interests of all the taxpayers and citizens of our county.
Miller: Requested to run by citizens of townships of Bartelme and Red Springs.
What is your opinion of the county’s current budget and property tax levy?
Huntington: We’re holding the budget good. There is great working by all of the members of the County Board.
Miller: Request a review of gaming revenue funds that are sent to the state of Wisconsin, and request considerations for tax relief, as this revenue is generated in Shawano County, why and how are the shares determined to be sent to the county for the general welfare of infrastructure being determined.
If you could change one thing about Shawano County government, what would it be?
Huntington: I am a very strong supporter of night County Board meetings. My reasoning is so more of the working-class people can attend our meetings and also run for office.
Miller: The ethics committee has not been used for check and balances for reassurance of operational integrity.
