Investigators say a Shawano County dairy farm lost three cows and perhaps as many as five in an apparent attack by coyotes.
David Ruid, a biologist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, said the incident occurred last week on a farm in the Birnamwood area and involved year-old calves weighing about 700 pounds each.
Although the farm owner suspected wolves in the attack, Ruid said all evidence points to coyotes as the predators.
Two cows were found mauled to death, and a third died later from injuries. Two others were reported missing.
