A 32-year-old Keshena man was sentenced in federal court last week to five years in prison for the assault of a 6-month-old child resulting in substantial bodily injury.

Derrick M. Corn will also serve another three years on federal supervised release after his prison sentence.

According to the criminal complaint, Menominee Tribal Police responded on Jan. 17 to a report of a possible child drowning at a residence on the reservation. The child was taken to Shawano Medical Center, where it was discovered he had sustained a skull fracture.

Chief Judge William Griesbach noted the serious injuries to the child and rejected Corn’s claim that the injuries occurred when his child was submerged under water for a period of time while taking a bath. Corn claimed he was shaving at the time and was not paying attention to the child.

Griesbach referenced the complete lack of evidence supporting Corn’s claim and cited the extensive medical reports disproving his claim, according to a news release from the U.S. Department of Justice.

The sentence was handed down in U.S. District Court in Green Bay on Dec. 9.

The case was investigated by the FBI and the Menominee Tribal Police Department.
