A seventh candidate has officially registered to run for Shawano mayor in the April election, with an eighth possibly waiting in the wings.
Jeanne Cronce, a former Shawano School District principal who sits on the city’s Plan Commission, filed her campaign registration statement Wednesday seeking the office being vacated by Lorna Marquardt in April.
Meanwhile, Alderwoman Sandy Steinke, who has also registered for a mayoral run, was noncommittal Wednesday about whether she would simultaneously try to reclaim her supervisor’s seat on the Shawano County Board.
Steinke is up for re-election in April, along with all 27 members of the County Board.
Steinke represents the county’s District 5 supervisory seat. She faces a possible challenge for that seat from former county jail administrator Steve Borroughs, who retired from that post in January.
As of Thursday, Steinke has not yet registered to run for another two-year term as county supervisor but has also not filed a declaration of non-candidacy.
Asked after a Common Council meeting Wednesday whether she would run again for the County Board, Steinke declined to answer.
The race for mayor has brought out an unprecedented number of potential candidates; seven who have registered and one who has taken out papers but not yet registered.
No one has turned in the minimum 50 signatures needed to qualify to be on the ballot. They have until 5 p.m. Jan. 5 to do that.
Candidates who have registered to run as mayor include Cronce, council members Steinke and Bob Kurkiewicz, former council member Brian Retzlaff, Kasey Hohn, Jim Oberstein and Mart Grams.
On the Common Council, Lisa Hoffman is officially a candidate against incumbent Fred Ponschok in District 4.
She has filed her campaign registration statement and has also turned in her nomination papers with the 20 signatures council members need to get on the ballot.
As of Thursdsy, Ponschok had not filed his campaign registration.
Two other council seats will also be on the ballot in April, held by Rhonda Strebel in District 2 and John Hoeffs in District 6, both of whom have filed registration statements and their nomination papers.
City Attorney Tim Schmid is also up for re-election, as is Shawano-Bonduel Municipal Judge Myron Heisted.
The spring election will be held April 5. Any primary races will be decided on Feb. 16.
