Former jail administrator among possible candidates

With nearly four weeks still to go in the filing season, several Shawano County Board races are already taking shape, according to information from the county clerk’s office.

Among the potential challengers is former county jail administrator Steve Borroughs, who has registered as a candidate for the District 5 seat in Shawano held by Sandy Steinke.

Borroughs resigned as jail administrator in January.

Steinke, who has registered to run for Shawano mayor in April, had not yet turned in her registration statement for another run as county supervisor as of Tuesday.

All 27 County Board seats are up for re-election in April. None of the incumbents has filed any declarations of non-candidacy.

Candidates have until 5 p.m. on Jan. 5 to file their registrations and the 20 signatures needed to get on the ballot.

In one possible County Board race, District 27 Supervisor Jon Zwirschitz, of Birnamwood, could face a rematch against former supervisor Marion Wnek, of Almon.

Zwirschitz defeated Wnek in the 2014 election.

Wnek filed his registration statement Tuesday. Zwirschitz has not yet done so.

In other potential races, Supervisor Mike McClelland, representing District 4 in Shawano, faces a possible challenge from Aimee Zienert, of Shawano; District 10 Supervisor Robert Krause, of Krakow, could face a challenge from David Kohn, of Cecil; and District 17 Supervisor Bonnie Olson, of Belle Plaine, faces a possible challenge from Allan Kuhn, of Shawano.

Olson had not yet filed her registration statement as of Tuesday.

Meanwhile, two more candidates have officially registered to run for the Shawano mayor seat being vacated by Lorna Marquardt in April.

Mart Grams and Brian Retzlaff, a former city alderman, both filed campaign registration statements this week.

Common Council members Steinke and Bob Kurkiewicz have both filed campaign registration statements for mayor, as have Kasey Hohn and Jim Oberstein.

Two others have taken out papers, but not yet returned them.

Mayoral candidates need at least 50 signatures to get on the ballot.

On the Common Council, Lisa Hoffman has filed her campaign registration statement to run against incumbent Fred Ponschok in District 4. However, as of Tuesday, Ponschok has not yet filed his campaign registration.

Two other council seats will also be on the ballot in April, held by Rhonda Strebel in District 2 and John Hoeffs in District 6.

Both have filed their campaign registration statements, and Hoeffs has also turned in his nomination papers with the 20 signatures needed to be on the ballot.

City Attorney Tim Schmid is also up for re-election, as is Shawano-Bonduel Municipal Judge Myron Heisted.

The spring election will be held April 5. Any primary races will be decided on Feb. 16.
