Gutho has been with department since 1988

The highest-ranking nonelected official in the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department will retire next month after nearly 28 years with the department.

Chief Deputy John Gutho began working with the sheriff’s office in March 1988 as a jailer, then moved up through dispatch, patrol and the captain’s position before becoming chief deputy eight years ago.

Gutho, 50, said he has mixed emotions about leaving, but there were a lot of reasons for choosing to retire now.

“I just want to do some other things, take it easy for a little bit,” he said.

Gutho said he was proud of having worked his way up through the ranks.

“I’m proud I can go out at the highest ranking,” he said.

Gutho also said he was proud to have worked with amazing people in every division over the years.

“They are some of the most dedicated, professional, hard-working people and I will miss them greatly,” he said.

Sheriff Adam Bieber said Gutho would be replaced from within the department.

“We have many qualified people to take over the duties of chief deputy,” Bieber said.

Bieber also said Gutho’s retirement did not come as a surprise, as he has been planning it for some time.

“John has managed the office of the sheriff with diligence for the past eight years and has been a deep well of information and guidance for me,” Bieber said. “John is well respected by everyone in the office of the sheriff and other departments throughout the county and state.”

Bieber said the retirement will create opportunities for those in the department who have been working hard to improve themselves and reach personal goals.

“John will be missed by everyone, but we know we will call on him from time to time for advice,” Bieber said.

Gutho’s effective date of retirement is Jan. 5.
