LORNA MARQUARDT
Shawano Mayor Lorna Marquardt has announced she will not run for another term in the spring election in April.
Marquardt has served as mayor for 14 years and six years prior to that as alderperson.
“Although the decision was difficult, I have decided I will not seek re-election,” she said. “I want to spend some quality time with my family, complete a few projects I am working on, and do some volunteer work.
“I look forward to supporting whoever is elected mayor as he or she continues to move the city of Shawano forward.”
Marquardt said her time in public service has gone by quickly.
“I am truly grateful to the City of Shawano residents for allowing me the privilege and honor of serving them,” she said. “I never anticipated being in public office for 20 years, but it has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.”
The mayor’s office is a two-year term.
In most elections Marquardt has run unopposed, as has most of the Common Council.
Three council seats will also be on the ballot in April. They are held by Rhonda Strebel, Fred Ponschok and John Hoeffs. City Attorney Tim Schmid is also up for re-election, as is Shawano-Bonduel Municipal Judge Myron Heisted.
Also expiring in April are the two-year terms of all 27 supervisors on the Shawano County Board.
Potential candidates looking to be on the ballot in April can start circulating their nomination papers on Tuesday. They will have until 5 p.m. Jan. 6 to file those papers, along with the 20 signatures needed to qualify.
The spring election will be held on April 5. If needed, primary races will be decided on Feb. 16.
