Navarino Nature Center has joined a global effort to increase charitable giving amid the holiday shopping season.
The center is participating in #GivingTuesday, which is held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving in the U.S. Occurring after the widely publicized Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping days, #GivingTuesday is intended to kick off the holiday giving season and inspire people to support charities and the causes they champion.
Tim Ewing, director of the nature center, said Navarino is participating to increase awareness and support for educational programs offered to over 3,000 area students annually.
“Staff and volunteers are working to expand offerings to special needs individuals and seniors, and your donations and support are critical to the creation of these offerings,” Ewing stated in a press release. “We are making great advances, however there is more to be done. Funding and support to increase the part-time naturalist position to full-time would be a great improvement to all programming at Navarino.”

In 2014, the third year of the movement, #GivingTuesday brought together 30,000 partners in 68 countries and registered 32.7 million impressions on Twitter, with its eponymous hashtag mentioned 698,600 times. Since 2012, online giving on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving has increased more than four-fold, based on findings by Blackbaud and the Indiana University’s Lilly Family School of Philanthropy.
