The Shawano County Humane Society is offering a discount on cat adoption costs over the next few weeks due to an unusually high feline population at the shelter.
The society’s assistant director, Shelly Hansen, says the number of cats is not typical for this late in the year. She said the spring is usually when the shelter sees the highest number of cats brought in, mostly strays and unwanted litters.
“Usually, we’re thinning our population out this time of year,” she said.
Hansen said it’s probably due to warmer weather lasting longer into the fall than usual.
The shelter, at 1290 Jaycee Court in Shawano, has about 100 cats that it hopes to find homes for between now and Christmas.
To that end, the shelter will slash its adoption fee from $125 to $50 starting Monday.
The fee will include spaying or neutering, along with rabies, distemper and other shots, along with a feline leukemia test.
The discount will last through Dec. 19.
This will be the first Christmas cat special the shelter has offered. The shelter has held cat “adopt-a-thons” during the summer over the past two years due to the high number of animals brought in.
The shelter handles about 500 cats a year.
In addition to new prospective cat owners, the shelter is also looking for more volunteers to get through the holiday season, Hansen said.
She also said the shelter could always use additional cleaning supplies.
