Two boys enjoying a movie in their Shawano home Wednesday were startled by a large tree that fell outside, narrowly missing their house.
Kaleb Lowney, 13, and his brother, Elliott, 12, were watching the baseball classic “The Rookie” when the tree collapsed outside about 11 a.m. in the 1100 block of South Lincoln Street.
The boys were jarred by a loud cracking, booming noise that seemed to make the house tremble.
“It just shook,” Kaleb said. “The house, like, rumbled.”
The incident occurred as rain ended Wednesday morning, followed by windy conditions.
A large branch from an oak tree in the front yard snapped off and came tumbling down, landing just between the Lowney house and a neighbor’s house. Neither building appeared to sustain any significant damage.
Neighbors came running to survey the situation and make sure everyone was alright.
Neighbor Woody Davis, president of the Shawano Common Council, said either house could have been badly damaged if the tree had fallen in another direction.
“It’s very fortunate,” he said.
