Senator calls agreement a diplomatic win

U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin said Wednesday she supports the Obama administration’s nuclear pact with Iran and she expects it will be implemented.

During a visit to the Menominee Reservation, the Wisconsin Democrat said President Obama might have to veto Republican efforts to undo the agreement banning Iran from pursuing nuclear weapons.

Baldwin, however, said she believes the historic negotiated accord will survive any such challenges.

“I think, ultimately, the agreement will move forward,” she said.

Wisconsin’s junior senator from Madison visited the Menominee Reservation on Wednesday to tour the tribe’s lumber mill operation, Menominee Tribal Enterprises, in Neopit.

She also planned to visit the Stockbridge-Munsee Reservation near Bowler.

Talking with reporters, Baldwin said she was disappointed that critics of the Iran accord were turning it into a partisan political issue. Negotiators for the United States and several allies, she said, persuaded Iran to halt its nuclear weapons program under a comprehensive deal that includes inspections to verify Iran’s compliance.

She hailed the deal as a diplomatic achievement to avoid military conflict.

“This is a process that shouldn’t be politicized,” she said. “It’s clearly in our nation’s security interests.”
