David Hawpetoss
Police in the Menominee Indian Tribe reservation are searching for a motorist they believe struck and killed a pedestrian and then fled the scene.
David Hawpetoss, 48, was found wounded along the road about 4:15 a.m. Saturday on Old South Branch Road north of Keshena.
Hawpetoss, a tribal member who lived in Gresham, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Tribal Police Chief Mark K. Waukau Sr. said investigators are seeking the public’s help to identify and locate the motorist involved in the incident, which they believe occurred Friday night or early Saturday morning.
Passersby came across the accident scene later and alerted authorities.
Broken automobile parts found at the scene are believed to be undercarriage pieces from a General Motors passenger car, possibly a Chevrolet or Oldsmobile.
Waukau said the police are looking for information about how Hawpetoss got to Old South Branch Road and whose vehicle struck him just north of Bent Tree Road.
“It’s important that we find out what happened,” Waukau said.
According to Swedberg Funeral Home, Hawpetoss was a Green Bay native and father of two who enjoyed Green Bay Packers football and was known as a handyman. He attended Lincoln High School in Manitowoc. He is also survived by his mother and four brothers and sisters.
A funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anthony’s Church in Neopit, with visitation starting at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
