The Clintonville Common Council recently approved continuing a fundraising campaign for a dog park in the city.

The council voted 5-2 in April to support development of a dog park, but the motion failed because six votes of the 10-member council were needed for it to pass. A motion to approve the fundraising campaign also failed in June on a 5-3 vote.

At the council’s July 13 meeting, the council voted 8-0 to reconsider the fundraising issue and then voted 6-2 to resurrect the campaign, which interim City Administrator Chuck Kell said had raised about $9,000 before it was stopped following the June vote.

Supporters of the dog park plan to raise $30,000 to cover the construction and maintenance of the dog park for several years.

Alderman Jim Krause said he was not opposed to a dog park but didn’t want taxpayers to have to pay for it. He and Mary Beth Kuester voted against the proposal July 13. Julie Stumbris, Gloria Dunlavy, Lois Bressette, Steven Kettenhoven, Jeannie Schley and Darrell Teal supported the measure. Brad Rokus and John Wilson were absent.
