Police probe possible motives

A motorist suspected of fleeing a rollover accident that injured the other driver has been released without charges while police sort out what happened.

Lt. Kurt Kitzman of the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department said the released woman could still face charges from the incident that occurred Wednesday afternoon on County Road BE in the town of Wescott.

Investigators need more time to piece together the circumstances surrounding the two-vehicle accident described by witnesses as an apparent road rage incident.

“It’s unfolding little by little,” Kitzman said Thursday.

Both vehicles were southbound on County Road BE about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday when they ended up side by side in some sort of altercation. The two vehicles then collided, sending one skidding off the road and landing upside-down along the roadside.

The driver in the rollover vehicle, described by police as a man from the Shawano area, was flown to a hospital in the Fox Cities area. No information about his injuries or condition has been released.

Police said there had been a previous domestic relationship between the two drivers. But investigators now believe the altercation that preceded Wednesday’s wreck was between the rollover driver and a male passenger in the woman’s vehicle.

Witnesses said the woman left the scene of the accident, but she was taken into custody a short time later.

None of the parties have been identified yet.
